The Club was formed in April 17th 1970 by Mr. Roy Warnes and his wife Esther with seventeen members at South Brent Primary School. To start the school managed to borrow a Judo mat from Newton Ferrers School, which gave us a good start. Over time enough money was raised with the help of Devon County Council to purchase some of our own. Members paid 2p a week !! Roy and Esther retired in 1985. For a few years we had several coaches, until 1990 when a committee was formed under the chair of Mr. Alan Tout with home grown coaches Mark Nicholls and Richard Cleave. The Club moved to Palstone Recreation Park, new mats were needed and with a lot of fundraising we were able to purchase 30 new ones. Mark retired form Judo in 1994, the main coaching was then taken on by Peter Ash, Lee Hard and Gary Craig. Richard Cleave carried on coaching at the club until 2003 when unfortunately after suffering a stroke he retired from coaching at the club, but still involved with Judo taday. We still use the hall today, with the whole room as a mat area, we currently have a large membership of juniors and many adults.
All visitors are most welcome, we have a lot of club Judo suits so please just come along, you first session is FREE. We only charge for a mat fee starting from £1.50 per night. We are a non political club as such any Judoka from any association or society are welcome at ant time.
